favorite bottomfish rod

I have the 7'6 heavy and use it for fluke and tog, typically with 6-10oz weight, mostly fishing from party boats. Light and sensitive goes without saying, rod loads up well with 8oz sinker + fish, plenty of power to get them off the bottom. Have caught a few tog in the 10-11lb range on the rod, paired with a saltiga 15, very fun rod to use. 7'6 Length is perfect especially when drifting for fluke, if you are jigging under the boat, you have the length to keep your rod tip low enough that your braid doesnt rub on the bottom of the boat. Have used the same rod for 3-4 years and is my favorite of all the rods Ive used.

Dissapointing

I went to the New England Fishing Show couple years ago looking for the perfect inshore boat casting setup for plugs, sluggos and top waters. I wanted something firm and light with super casting distance and heft to land a 30+ striper in current. After looking at Loomis St Croix Shimano, Penn, etc and price points I bought the Night Ranger and paired with a Shimano Twin Power 5000 . almost $1k later thought I had my dream rig.

The problems started immediately when I (unbeknown to me) the rod had a faulty guide, that kept cutting my line and losing my jigs and plugs, forcing me time and again to re tie and re rig during critical moments when I was on fish. After realizing what the issue was (after thinking I had bad knots, put new expensive power pro )and some time contacting customer service (which consists of a tackle shop in New Jersey) I was able to get arrange to get it fixed from the vendor in CT I purchased it from but they still charged me a service fee(?!). So I lost most of the season due to the faulty rod, but even now , it doesn’t feel or perform well compared to my Lamiglass or Penn or Berkeley rods. I catch lots of fish on the others but the Night Ranger doesn’t have the mojo. The butt of the rod is too long, with the reel being too high up the rod for my purpose. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be and for someone else who doesn’t get a lemon and using it in a different way it might be ok.? But not for me.
